My predicted 25 man roster

The Twins opening day is coming in just over two weeks. There are still quite a few roster battles going on in the bullpen, the infield and the outfield. Here is how I predict all the final decisions will end up.

  • Starting Rotation (5 players)
    1. Jose Berrios
      Kyle Gibson
      Jake Odorizzi
      Michael Pineda
      Martin Perez
  • Unless the Twins go sign an impact arm like Dallas Keuchel or Gio Gonzalez, the rotation is all but set for 2019. The first two pitchers are going to be solid, with Berrios having Cy Young potential. To me, both Pineda and Odorizzi are hit or miss pitchers who could be solid, or just under average. The final starter, Martin Perez is someone who with the right coaching can potentially be a solid number 5 starter.
  • Bullpen (7 players)
    1. Trevor May
      Blake Parker
      Trevor Hildenberger
      Addison Reed
      Taylor Rogers
      Matt Magill
      Adalberto Mejia
  • The locks to make the bullpen are Blake Parker, Trevor May and Taylor Rogers. Addison Reed, Trevor Hildenberger and Matt Magill are all like 80%-90% guaranteed to make it. I have Mejia over Romero in my bullpen because I believe Romero will be sent to AAA to get extra work as a reliever. The Twins won’t need 8 relievers to start the season because of off days and weather issues.
  • Catcher (3 players)
    1. Jason Castro
      Mitch Garver
      Willians Astudillo
  • Yes, I have three catchers on the opening day roster, but is Astudillo really a catcher? He plays everywhere so he’s really just like a utility guy. Castro and Garver should both be locks because Castro’s playing time may be limited with him coming off of an injury. Mitch Garver can certainly hit and now we will get to see his improved defense in the majors.
  • First base (one player)
    1. C.J. Cron
  • C.J. Cron should get the first base spot over both Tyler Austin and Lucas Duda. I don’t think either of those players begin the regular season still with the organization because Austin is out of options while the Twins may definitely release Duda. Cron is a solid bridge option as long as he can maintain the success he saw last season. If he can hit 25-30 home runs with an OPS around .815 then he will play a big role.
  • Second base (one player)
    1. Jonathan Schoop
  • I have wrote about Schoop many times this offseason because I think he was a great pickup. One of the best second basemen in 2016-17 who had a down year last year and will be looking to rebound.
  • Shortstop (two players)
    1. Jorge Polanco
      Ehire Adrianza
  • During the offseason, Jorge Polanco signed a long term extension to stay as the teams shortly of the future. I really liked this extension because I believe Polanco is a great impact player for the team. Adrianza is out of options and has been a great utility player for the past few seasons. He will play all over the infield.
  • Third base (one player)

    1. Marwin Gonzalez
  • The late signing of Marwin will prove to be huge after Sano went to the IL. The twins now have an impactful player to take his spot right away for the month he is gone. Gonzalez is a super utility man who will literally play all over the field.
  • Outfield (five players)
    1. Eddie Rosario
      Byron Buxton
      Max Kepler
      Nelson Cruz
      Jake Cave
  • The outfield will begin with Rosario in left, Buxton in center and Kepler in right. Nelson Cruz will be the full time designated hitter while Jake Cave will play a backup role to all four of them. The outfield is full of young potential and it is capped off with terrific veteran presence. I expect big things from at least four of these players this season, especially on the defensive side where they will be crazy good.
