Mid season Twins trade proposal: Madison Bumgarner
The Minnesota Twins were expected by many fans this offseason to go sign a quality starter like Patrick Corbin or Dallas Keuchel. Instead, they will enter the season with Martin Perez. The front office basically stated they want to prove their young core can compete before they get the big names. Well, what if they are competing at the trade deadline? Go get Madison Bumgarner.
Bumgarner is a three time World Series champion with the Giants, but in 2019 he will be playing on an aging team in desperate need of a rebuild. They currently have the 26th ranked farm system in all of baseball while in 2018 they had the 3rd oldest team in baseball (29.6 AVG age). It makes a lot of sense that they will be selling off some pieces this year, including impending free agent Madison Bumgarner.
What would the Twins have to give up for an elite starter like Bumgarner? I looked at the most recent trades involving an ace and here’s what they looked like:
•Yu Darvish (4.01 ERA, 1.168 WHIP) for Dodgers #4 prospect Willie Calhoun, #17 A.J. Alexy and #27 Brendan Davis
•Justin Verlander (3.82 ERA, 1.279 WHIP) for Astros #3 prospect Franklin Perez, #9 Daz Cameron and #11 Jake Rogers
•David Price (2.53 ERA, 1.110 WHIP) for Blue Jays #1 prospect Daniel Norris, Matt Boyd and unranked Jairo Labourt
•Johnny Cueto (2.62 ERA, 0.934 WHIP) for Royals #4 prospect Brandon Finnegan, unranked Cody Reed and John Lamb
So after looking at those four trades, it looks like the team acquiring the pitcher won at least 3 out of 4 if not all.
It’s looking like the Twins may have to give up a haul like this: #5 prospect OF Trevor Larnach, #10 prospect SS/2B Nick Gordon and #19 RHP prospect Jordan Balazovic.
Twins outfielder Trevor Larnach was the teams first round pick in 2018. With the Twins hopefully having a set outfield of Kepler, Rosario and Buxton as well as Brent Rooker and Alex Kirilloff coming, Larnach might be expendable.
For Nick Gordon, there is really no room for him with Schoop, Polanco, Marwin Gonzalez, Royce Lewis and Wander Javier. He also struggled last season and may be in need of a fresh start.
RHP Jordan Balazovic is a 20 year old who could very well be an effective major league pitcher some day with him 6-foot-4 height. He is a former 5th round pick in 2016.
Final Trade Proposal:
San Francisco Giants send LHP Madison Bumgarner to the Minnesota Twins for OF Trevor Larnach, SS Nick Gordon and RHP Jordan Balazovic.
If the Twins can somehow land Madison Bumgarner, a rotation looking like this would definitely be fun to watch
Alright now keep in mind this is 100% speculation and prediction. There have been no rumors tying these two sides together. Anyways, this was fun.
